Believe it or not—most of the habits we form tend to be bad habits. It takes concerted efforts to form good habits. Bad habits form on their own!
The first step to deal with our bad habits is to identify them. The second step is to understand why we are victims of those bad habits. And, the third step is to find better alternatives to replace our bad habits so that we may align ourselves on the track of good habits.
Ever since the mobile phone appeared on the horizon of human life, we have become a slave of this all-in-one instrument. We are so obsessed with our mobile phone that we do not even realise the amount of time we spend with it. Unless we keep tabs on our mobile phone usage, we might end up wasting a lot of our time. Today, we feel insecure if we forget to pick up our mobile phone when we go out or if the battery gets discharged. It generates a feeling of insecurity and total disconnect with the world. One of the first things we do when we wake up in the morning is to reach for our mobile phone. If we could replace it with a morning cup of coffee or tea, or, get into the habit of writing our diary, we may be able to put off our urge to reach for our mobile phone first thing in the morning and spend a major part of our life engaged in conversations that are not as important as the things we tend to ignore or put off in our bid to engage with our mobile phone. Whether we like it or not, we face paucity of time every day of our lives spurred by our excessive engagement with our mobile phones. As far as possible, avoid getting addicted to your mobile phone.
Quite a few of us have this habit of skipping our breakfast. And, some of us even feel proud that we can manage without breakfast without realizing the kind of damage it could cause to our brawn and brain. All of us fast during our sleeping hours. Since most of us sleep during the night, the first intake of food upon waking up is called breakfast. The blood sugar level of our body needed to build our muscles and help our brain function to its optimum level are usually low when we wake up. Breakfast helps to restore the blood sugar levels to the required level. If you are hard pressed for time and are unable to prepare your breakfast before you leave for office, just pop in some dry fruits or consume some nutritious drink before you begin your day. That will make a whale of a difference. Do not skip your breakfast at any cost.
Most of us are impulsive buyers by nature. Some of us get a kick out of impulsive buying. Credit cards are partly to be blamed for this. We see something that catches our fancy and we buy it without stopping to think whether we need it at that point of time. If we spend on things that we do not need, we may find ourselves cash-strapped when we need money to buy what we need. If we spend only on things that we really need, we may find some money to save at the end of the month. Money saved is money earned. It is more difficult to save money than to earn it. Our savings secure our lives like nothing else. So, it makes sense to practice austerity to some extent.
Even those of us who do not maintain a calendar of our engagements tend to subconsciously assign time slots for television serials or OTT content. This is time-consuming and results in wastage of time to a large extent. The takeaway is far too insignificant in terms of entertainment. And, this cuts into our time meant to be spent with our near and dear ones or to tone up our health or relaxing. Try to spend less time on OTT and more time with your family and friends to ensure a better bonding. OTT will never come to your rescue when you need help but your relationships will.
Some of us have this bad habit of binge eating or munching at the drop of a hat. This may lead to obesity and all the problems that go with it. It also affects our focus on the thing that we are doing. So, it is better to schedule our food intake and spend some time meditating to overcome this weakness.
