Most of Our Problems are Created by Us

This might sound rather ridiculous to you. But the fact of the matter is that this is the gospel truth.

It is our negative bent of mind that gets us into problems. Most of our problems have their origin in situations. But we tend to look at situations as problems. If we tackle situations as they come, there would be no problems. If we ignore them, or put them off to deal with them at a later date, they grow into problems one day.

Let us take an example: I receive my electricity bill on the 1st of the month. The last date for payment is 15th of the month. When I receive the bill, it is just a situation like any other. So far, so good. And, this will continue to be a situation till the 15th of the month. That means I have 15 days at my disposal to deal with this situation. If I fail to deal with this situation within 15 days, that’s when the situation turns into a problem.

If I miss the deadline, I may have to pay penalty. Or, my electricity connection may be severed for not making the payment of the bill on time. So, if I do not deal with the situation within the deadline, the situation evolves into a full-blown problem. Who created this problem? Who is responsible for this? None other than me. I cannot blame anyone but myself for the consequences of not paying the bill on time.

Maybe I did not take the matter seriously when it should have been taken seriously. Maybe I was a little casual in my approach. Maybe I just forgot. Whatever the case may be, the fact is that I failed to make the payment on time.
What is the reason for this lapse? Maybe I do not have a system in place whereby these things of this sort could be taken care of like clockwork. If only I had the alacrity and seriousness to pay the bill on time, I wouldn’t have faced this problem.

The bottom line is that by not paying the bill on time I have created a problem for myself. In other words, by not dealing with the situation within the stipulated time, I have allowed the situation to turn into a problem.
If we are a little more careful; if we are a little more alert; if we are a little more serious about these situations, we would spend some time putting in place a system whereby these routine situations are handled like clockwork. If we are able to do that, we would have fewer problems to contend with and things will move more systematically. This will go a long way in reducing the problems in our life.
