No matter what position we hold in an organization, all of us are self-obsessed and tend to create an impression among our friends and relatives that we are the most important employees of the organization. We almost make it appear that the entire organization is dependent on us. That we are indispensable for the organization. Some employees are truly indispensable to the organization because of their contribution to the working of the organization. The point is that even those employees who are nowhere near that, stake a claim to their indispensability.
Here are a dozen parameters to assess whether an employee is truly indispensable or just a terrible employee pretending to be an indispensable employee.
If you are someone who does not arrive on time or leave early as a matter of habit, you are a terrible employee.
If you are someone who makes excuses instead of delivering the jobs assigned to you, on time, you are a terrible employee.
If you are someone who is happy to do the minimum that is required to earn the pay packet at the end of the month, you are a terrible employee.
If you are a gossip-monger, you are eating into your own output and the output of the employee you are gossiping with.
If you claim to be the smartest employee of your organisation, you should be at the top. If you are not, it should set you thinking.
If you do not believe in your company’s USP, mission or values that means you are not committed to your job. That you are doing the job only for the sake of the monthly pay packet.
If you are less productive than the average output of your colleagues, you are a terrible employee.
If you don’t get along well with others in the company, you are a terrible employee.
If you find yourself apologizing to people frequently, that means you are not taking your job seriously enough.
If you are constantly looking for a way out, you are a terrible employee.
If you are not self-driven and need to be goaded into doing your work, you are a terrible employee.
Reflect on these traits and get rid of them one-by-one if you want to be indispensable to your organization.
