About six decades ago, there was a popular saying doing the rounds. The popular saying was that all important things in life come for free. The important things in questions in those days were three in number. They were land, water and air. Though land was no longer free, the spirit of the saying was that land, water and air were providence of nature.

Today, we know that the price of land at prime locations could be sky high. Water arrives in bottles and tankers at a price. And, the day is not far when every household will have to invest in air purifiers. Many plush offices and homes have already gone in for air purifiers. So, we are stuck at a point in time when the things that were meant to be free are no longer free. We are paying through our nose for land, water and air.

However, we need not get disheartened. There are still some really important things that come for free. For instance, heart-warming hugs from our friends and relatives come for free.

The smile that lights up our lives comes for free. Just as you can light many lamps with one lamp, smile too is contagious and helps in spreading a spirit of happiness.

Similarly, friends who mean so much to us come for free. Kisses from our near and dear ones come for free. Think of what a kiss from a mother to her child or from a child to his or her mother can do to each other!

Think of the smallest unit for our society—family—that too comes for free. Except for those who are victims of insomnia, sleep comes for free.

At a time when the prices are skyrocketing, the lifeline of our lives—love—come for free. ‘Laughter is the best medicine,’ they say. We still do not pay for laughter.

In the same way, the memories that we cherish in our lives come for free.

So don’t lose heart. Be cheerful. We may not get land, water and air for free anymore. But other things have replaced them to give us reasons to smile.
